Field Hockey Canada’s 2009 edition of the senior men’s and women’s national championships of indoor field hockey where played over the February 27th weekend at the the Talisman Centre in Calgary, Alberta. This year’s event featured ten teams across three provinces competing for Canada’s indoor hockey championship. The province of Alberta was well represented in the women’s tournament with the Under-19 Provincial Team, two University of Calgary squads, and a select team of players from each the Calgary Ladies Field Hockey Association and the Field Hockey Association of Calgary participating. They will be joined by a strong Team Ontario featuring nationally-carded athletes Brittney Blount, Sherri Bradie, Malinda Hapuarachchi, and Kristen Shier.

Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta North, and Alberta South competed in a four-team round robin tournament to decide the men’s championship. Both the men’s and women’s gold medal games will be played on Sunday March 1st.

The senior indoor national championships are a priority competitive event in the Training to Win stage of field hockey’s Long-Term Athlete Development Model. The competition is open to men’s and women’s senior teams from across Canada as nominated by their respective Provincial Sport Organization.

4. Canadian Womens Results from Pan American Cup

The Canadian national women’s field hockey team defeated Team Mexico 10-1 Sunday morning in their final match of the Pan American Cup in Bermuda. Canada finishes the nine-day continental qualifier for the World Cup in fifth place. “We came out hard today to prove that our fifth place finish doesn’t reflect what we are capable of,” said Canadian player Thea Culley of Rossland, British Columbia.

Teams finishing second through sixth will be invited to one of three last-chance World Cup qualifying tournaments in 2010. The tournament winner automatically qualifies.

Canada dominated play from start to finish led by a four-goal performance from Culley. Katie Baker, Cailie O’Hara, Natalie Wise, Shannon Elmitt (two goals), and Jessalyn Walkey also scored for Canada.

The goals were the first of their international careers for Wise and Elmitt.
