About Field Hockey
The game of Field Hockey is known from its outdoor base being played by mostly female athletes. In reality, the game is played by both genders in both indoor and outdoor venues. The outdoor game is played on a field the same size as a football field. Officially the field dimensions are 91.50 metres by 56 metres. It is quite often that Field Hockey, soccer and football use the same field. As such, the exact dimensions may be not as mentioned, but the game goes on. The goals are BIG 3.66 m wide and 2.14 m tall. There are 10 players and 1 goalie on the field for each team. It sounds crowded, but this corresponds to the development of teamwork, fitness and individual skills.
Field Hockey Manitoba uses one of 2 outdoor artificial turf fields in Winnipeg located at 845 Concordia in East Kildonan. It situated just behind the Kildonan East High School and is also known as the East Side Eagles field. If you remember the 1999 Pan Am Games, this field was host to Field Hockey and is part of the legacy to this event.
Back to the sport itself it is very fast moving sport played with a short stick with a hooked end. The stick may be made of wood or a composite mix of wood and carbon fibre or just carbon fibre. The ball is very hard so as to move easily when passed or shot. Goalies are at the mercy of the shooters they cannot catch the ball or cover it as in ice hockey or soccer they can only hit it with their stick, bat it with their hand or kick it with their foot which is covered with a kicker. Goalies are very quick, agile and somewhat acrobatic due the nature of their equipment. Ball movement is done with only one side of the stick. Again this puts a premium on skill development. There are no off sides, so tactics play a large role in the success of teams. As with any team sport, teamwork is of utmost importance in order to score.
